Texas Tech University announced plans to erect a statue of Donny Anderson at the entrance of Jones AT&T Stadium. The statue will serve as a permanent tribute to Anderson’s extraordinary contributions to Red Raiders football and his impact on the program’s national recognition during the 1960s.

Donny Anderson, known affectionately as the “Golden Palomino,” played at Texas Tech from 1963 to 1965 and was widely regarded as one of the most dynamic players in college football during his era. A two-time All-American, Anderson revolutionized the running back position with his versatility, speed, and uncanny ability to change the course of a game. His performances drew national attention to the Texas Tech program and helped set the foundation for its long-term growth and competitiveness.

Anderson’s college career remains etched in the school’s record books. He finished with 2,280 rushing yards, 2,280 receiving yards, and over 5,000 all-purpose yards—an astonishing feat during an era when offensive production was more conservative. His exploits led to his selection as the No. 7 overall pick in the 1965 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, where he would go on to win multiple championships under legendary coach Vince Lombardi.

Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt praised Anderson’s legacy during the announcement, stating, “Donny Anderson is more than a football legend; he is a symbol of Red Raider pride, resilience, and excellence. His story continues to inspire generations of student-athletes. This statue will stand not just as a symbol of athletic greatness, but as a reminder of what is possible when talent meets character and hard work.”

The statue is expected to be unveiled during the 2025 football season, coinciding with a celebratory weekend that will include a special halftime ceremony, the presence of former teammates and coaches, and a fan appreciation event. The university hopes the statue will become a must-see landmark for both longtime Red Raider fans and visiting supporters alike.

Donny Anderson, now retired and living in Texas, expressed deep gratitude upon hearing the news. “It’s an incredible honor. Texas Tech gave me a home, an education, and a stage to chase my dreams. I’m proud to have worn the Double T and to be remembered in this way by a school and community I love dearly.” His legacy, both on and off the field, continues to shape Texas Tech’s proud football tradition.
