The NCAA transfer portal is nearing its December 28 closure, signaling a final wave of player movement for college football programs. On Thursday morning, Tennessee football received an unexpected update regarding its quarterback depth.
Backup quarterback Gaston Moore announced that he will enter the transfer portal, as reported by insider Matt Zenitz. Moore appeared in five games this season, primarily in late-game situations, but made a notable impact when he stepped in for starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava during a win over Mississippi State, after Iamaleava left the game with a head injury. During his time on the field this season, Moore passed for 201 yards and two touchdowns.
Moore originally began his college career at UCF before transferring to Tennessee in 2021, following head coach Josh Heupel’s move to the SEC program. Over his four seasons with the Vols, Moore accumulated 273 passing yards and two touchdowns. Despite being a backup for most of his tenure, he demonstrated readiness and capability when called upon.
With one year of eligibility remaining, Moore now aims to find a program where he can compete for a starting role. His departure comes as he seeks more playing time and an opportunity to further showcase his skills. Moore’s decision marks his third collegiate destination, and he is expected to make a choice on his new home soon.
In addition to Moore, defensive back Christian Harrison has also entered the transfer portal, adding to Tennessee’s offseason roster changes as the team prepares for future challenges.
