Paul McCartney has expressed concerns about AI in music, particularly its potential to undermine artists’ control over their work. In a BBC interview, he discussed the use of AI in creating The Beatles’ final single, Now and Then, released in 2023. The song utilized AI to isolate and enhance John Lennon’s vocals from an old demo cassette, allowing the surviving Beatles to complete the track.

McCartney acknowledged the technology’s benefits, noting, “We took an old cassette of John’s and cleaned his voice up so it sounded like it had just been recorded yesterday. So it has its uses.” However, he warned of a “Wild West” scenario where AI could exploit artists’ work without proper copyright protections, especially for younger musicians. He emphasized the need for legislation to protect creative thinkers, stating, “Protect the creative artists—or you’re not going to have them”.The debate sparked by McCartney’s comments centers on balancing AI’s potential to innovate with the risk of eroding artists’ rights. He, alongside figures like Elton John and Kate Bush, campaigned against the UK’s Data (Use and Access) Bill, passed in June 2025, which critics argued lacked transparency in how AI models use creative data.

Despite amendments, concerns persist about whether artists can effectively opt out of having their work used to train AI systems. On X, sentiments echo McCartney’s stance, with users like @laylavladi praising artists for advocating copyright protections against AI profiteering.Regarding your request for a picture, could you clarify whether you want me to generate an image related to Paul McCartney, Now and Then, or the AI music debate? Alternatively, I can describe a relevant image, such as the Now and Then single cover, which features a minimalist design with a clock-like graphic symbolizing time and nostalgia. Let me know your preference!
