Patrick Mahomes Leads Chiefs to Victory Despite Ankle Injury, Eyes No. 1 Seed

In the week leading up to Saturday’s matchup against the Texans, speculation swirled about how effective Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes would be while battling an ankle injury. It didn’t take long for Mahomes to put those questions to rest.

On the opening drive, Mahomes capped the Chiefs’ first possession with an impressive 15-yard touchdown run, setting the tone for a 27-19 victory. Though Mahomes downplayed the significance of his early score, the play energized his team as they moved one step closer to clinching the top seed in the AFC playoffs.

After the game, Mahomes spoke about the pride he takes in pushing through adversity, especially when less than 100 percent.

“I ask a lot from the guys around me,” Mahomes said. “So, if I’m going to ask them to play through pain or fight through nicks and bruises, I have to do the same. It’s about being out there with my team and competing. If I feel like I can help us win, I’ll be on that field.”

Mahomes will continue managing his ankle injury ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Steelers. A victory in that matchup or a Bills loss to the Patriots on Sunday would secure the Chiefs the coveted No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
