Kavan, a 5’8” right-hander from Overland Park, Kansas, has emerged as the Longhorns’ ace, leading Texas to its first national championship in 2025 with a performance that stunned the softball world. Facing Canady, the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year who signed a historic $1.05 million NIL deal with Texas Tech’s Matador Club, Kavan delivered not once but twice in the 2025 WCWS championship series. Her poise under pressure helped Texas defeat the No. 12-seeded Red Raiders in a thrilling best-of-three series, clinching the title with a 10-4 rout in Game 3 on June 6, 2025. Kavan’s dominance in Oklahoma City included a masterful performance in Game 1, where she outdueled Canady, and a pivotal role in Game 3, where Texas chased the million-dollar pitcher after a five-run first inning.

“Teagan’s our rock,” said Texas coach Mike White after the WCWS triumph. “She doesn’t get the headlines like some, but she steps up every time. Going 5-0 against a pitcher like NiJaree? That’s legendary.”

The unbeaten streak against Canady began during the 2024 season, when Canady was still at Stanford, leading the Cardinal to the WCWS semifinals. As a freshman, Kavan faced Canady three times in 2024, securing victories in each matchup, including critical regional and super regional games. Her ability to neutralize Canady’s lethal rise ball and nation-leading 0.65 ERA in 2024 was a sign of things to come. Fast forward to 2025, and Kavan continued her mastery, going 2-0 against Canady in the WCWS finals. Over these five games, Kavan consistently kept Texas Tech’s offense in check, allowing an average of just 1.8 runs per game against a pitcher who boasts a career 0.81 ERA and 317 strikeouts in 2025 alone.

What makes Kavan’s 5-0 record even more impressive is the context. Canady, a three-time All-American, is a two-way phenom who not only dominates in the circle but also hits .280 with 11 home runs for Texas Tech. Her $1 million transfer from Stanford to Texas Tech in 2024, backed by boosters like Patrick Mahomes, made her the face of softball’s NIL era. Yet Kavan, without the fanfare or seven-figure deals, has been her kryptonite. In Game 2 of the 2025 WCWS finals, Canady pitched a complete game, scattering six hits and striking out six, but Kavan and Texas still edged out a 4-3 victory, showcasing her ability to match Canady pitch for pitch in a duel for the ages.
