Edmonton Oilers Sign Andrew Mangiapane to Two-Year Contract in Major Offseason Move

Edmonton Oilers have officially signed former Calgary Flames forward Andrew Mangiapane to a two-year contract, marking a significant addition to their offensive lineup. The deal, reportedly worth $6.5 million total, comes as the Oilers look to build on their recent playoff success and push further toward a Stanley Cup championship. Mangiapane, known for his relentless work ethic, two-way play, and knack for scoring key goals, brings a fresh dynamic to an already dangerous Edmonton roster.

The 28-year-old winger had spent his entire NHL career with the Flames before this stunning move across the Battle of Alberta divide. Mangiapane tallied 14 goals and 26 assists last season and has consistently proven himself as a reliable top-six forward with strong defensive responsibility. His best campaign came in the 2021–22 season, when he notched 35 goals, demonstrating his capability to be a potent scoring threat. Edmonton’s front office believes he can rediscover that form while playing alongside elite playmakers like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Oilers General Manager Ken Holland expressed his excitement in a statement released shortly after the announcement, stating, “Andrew is a high-character player who competes hard every shift. His speed, grit, and offensive instincts make him an excellent fit for our system. We believe he will thrive in Edmonton and make an immediate impact.” The signing is widely seen as a response to Edmonton’s need for secondary scoring and improved forward depth following their hard-fought run to the Stanley Cup Final.

The move is also a rare example of a player crossing the intense Alberta rivalry, which adds a dramatic edge to the acquisition. Mangiapane, who was drafted by Calgary in 2015, said in his first remarks as an Oiler, “I’m grateful for my years in Calgary, but I’m thrilled about this new chapter. Edmonton has a world-class organization, and I’m excited to contribute to a team that’s on the brink of something special.” His comments reflect a professional transition, but fans on both sides are sure to feel the emotional weight of this interprovincial shift.

For the Oilers, this deal bolsters their forward corps and offers more lineup flexibility. Mangiapane can play both wings and is known for his tenacity on the forecheck and special teams versatility. Whether slotted on the second or third line, his presence is expected to create more matchup problems for opposing teams. Additionally, the two-year term gives both parties a reasonable window to evaluate fit and performance without long-term financial risk.

The signing of Mangiapane sends a clear message to the league: the Oilers are not content with near-misses and are going all-in for a Stanley Cup push. With the continued leadership of McDavid and Draisaitl, plus new pieces like Mangiapane, Edmonton appears poised to remain a dominant force in the Western Conference. As the dust settles on free agency, the addition of a proven, hardworking winger like Andrew Mangiapane could be one of the summer’s most quietly impactful moves.
