Pride Park was plunged into chaos late Thursday as John Eustace sensationally quit as Derby County head coach, submitting his resignation letter just 12 months after returning to the club he once captained.
The 45-year-old walked out on the Rams to take the Blackburn Rovers job in February 2025, but sources now confirm Eustace has stunned the EFL again by resigning from Derby amid mounting interest from Coventry City if Frank Lampard departs.
The move has “sent shockwaves across the EFL world” with fans chanting “I can’t believe he is going” outside Pride Park.
Eustace rejoined Derby in February 2025, leaving play-off chasing Blackburn to take over a Rams side 21st in the Championship and battling relegation.
He signed a deal until 2028, with owner David Clowes hailing his “craft, commitment and intelligence” and calling him “a real leader”. Derby cited the “opportunity to move closer to his family and return to a former club” as key to his initial switch.
His exit now is a hammer blow. Eustace guided Derby from a relegation scrap to play-off contention in just 14 months, lifting them from 19th last season to within three points of the top six this term.
The Rams’ statement in February said they “fully understand” his desire to return to a former club, but fans are furious after he leaves “at this crucial stage of the season”.
Blackburn were “disappointed” when Eustace left Ewood Park, despite having strengthened the squad in January and sitting fifth.
Rovers said they “hoped John would see out the season” but accepted family reasons played a “significant role”.
Now Derby face the same agony. Eustace’s resignation letter was handed in late Wednesday, with assistant Matt Gardiner and first-team coach Keith Downing also expected to depart.
Coventry are monitoring the situation, with Lampard linked with a third Chelsea return.
