Everton could be considering a surprise addition to their attacking options, with Anthony Martial emerging as a potential target for David Moyes’ side. The former Manchester United forward is currently a free agent, and reports suggest that Everton have made enquiries about the possibility of bringing the Frenchman to Goodison Park.
According to Foot Mercato, Everton have explored the situation surrounding Martial as they continue to assess options capable of strengthening their squad. The 30-year-old is reportedly available after leaving Mexican club Monterrey in June, opening the door to a potential return to English football.
For Everton, the situation presents an interesting opportunity. Signing a player of Martial’s experience without paying a transfer fee could make financial sense, particularly if Moyes believes the forward still has the ability to make an impact in the Premier League.
However, a deal would be far from straightforward.
Reports suggest Martial has already rejected approaches from two Ligue 1 clubs as he waits for what he considers the right opportunity. The French forward is reportedly taking his time over his next move and is continuing to maintain his fitness while considering his options.
His salary expectations could also become a significant obstacle. Martial’s wages are reportedly in the region of £3 million per year, a figure Everton would need to carefully consider before making any serious attempt to complete a deal.
The bigger question, however, is whether Martial would represent the right sporting solution for the Toffees.
At his best, the former Manchester United attacker demonstrated his ability to score and create goals at the highest level. During his time in England, he produced moments of exceptional quality and proved capable of leading the line or operating across the attacking positions.
Yet, consistency has often been the major concern throughout his career. Injuries and fluctuating form affected his later years at Manchester United, meaning any potential move to Everton would inevitably carry an element of risk.
Moyes and the Everton recruitment team would therefore need to weigh Martial’s undoubted talent against the financial and sporting commitment required to bring him to the club.
Everton’s need for greater depth in attack could make the Frenchman an attractive option. With Thierno Barry currently one of the main striking options, adding an experienced forward could provide additional competition and cover across a long and demanding season.
Martial’s experience in the Premier League could also reduce the adjustment period usually associated with signing a player from abroad. He knows the demands, the physicality and the expectations of English football.
Still, Everton must consider whether his reported salary demands fit within their financial structure and whether his recent career trajectory makes the move worthwhile.
For now, the situation remains at the enquiry stage, and no agreement has been reached. But with Martial available as a free agent, the possibility of a surprise move cannot be completely ruled out.
Could Anthony Martial be Everton’s next big gamble — or would David Moyes be wise to look elsewhere? The coming weeks may provide the answer.
