The South Carolina Gamecocks and Illinois Fighting Illini are set to face off in the Citrus Bowl, marking the first-ever meeting between these programs. ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) predicts a Gamecocks victory, giving South Carolina a 72.5% chance of winning, compared to Illinois’ 27.5%.

Both teams come into the matchup with impressive 9-3 records. South Carolina’s season was highlighted by significant wins over Texas A&M, Missouri, and rival Clemson. Illinois also exceeded expectations, securing key victories against Nebraska and Michigan.

Citrus Bowl History

The Illini are making their second appearance in the Citrus Bowl, having previously defeated Virginia in the 1990 edition. Meanwhile, this marks the Gamecocks’ fourth trip to variations of the game. South Carolina holds a 2-1 record, with their last appearance coming in 2014 against Wisconsin. Their lone Citrus Bowl loss came in 1975 to Miami-Ohio.

Motivation and Playoff Snub

South Carolina enters the game with a potential chip on its shoulder after being passed over for a College Football Playoff spot. The Gamecocks’ losses to Alabama and Ole Miss ultimately left them ranked behind those teams and Miami, despite their strong resume.

Game Details

The Citrus Bowl will kick off on New Year’s Eve at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. With both teams looking to cap off their successful seasons with a victory, fans can expect an intense battle on the field.
