Calipari on Mark Pope: ‘Kentucky Found the Perfect Coach

John Calipari made his much-anticipated return to Rupp Arena on Saturday, leading Arkansas to an 89-79 victory over Kentucky. The win was bittersweet for many Wildcats fans, who had been eager for revenge after Calipari’s surprising departure from the program—especially after initially committing to return for the 2024-25 season.

However, instead of basking in the victory, Calipari took the high road. He praised Kentucky’s first-year head coach, Mark Pope, for his leadership and the team’s performance.

“What Kentucky is doing, and how they’re doing it—Mark Pope is doing a great job. Not a good job. A great job,” Calipari said postgame. “Good team. Good shooting. Big kids are playing well. Mark’s done great. He was the right guy for the job.”

Arkansas’ Statement Win

For Arkansas, this was a much-needed win in a turbulent season. The Razorbacks shot 55.2% from the field and 52% from three-point range, well above their season average of 33.5% from beyond the arc. They managed this offensive explosion without star point guard Boogie Fland, who suffered a season-ending hand injury in January.

Coming into the game, Arkansas was 1-6 in conference play, making this a critical victory. Calipari acknowledged how important it was for his team.

“Whether it was Kentucky or someone else, we just needed to win,” he said. “The hardest thing is you’re coaching, you’re teaching, you’re bringing them together—they’ve got to feel some success to know that we’re on the right path.”

Kentucky’s Mixed Results

While the loss stung, Kentucky is still having a solid season, sitting at 15-6 overall and 4-4 in SEC play. Mark Pope has particularly excelled against top-tier competition, with the Wildcats boasting a 6-1 record against Top-15 opponents.

However, there are growing concerns about their inconsistency. Kentucky has struggled against teams they are expected to beat, going 1-5 against unranked Power Four opponents, with the only win coming against Louisville.

Calipari Reflects on His Legacy

Despite the emotions surrounding his return, Calipari remained appreciative of his time at Kentucky, acknowledging the 15 incredible years he spent with the program.

“I made it clear—it was a privilege and an honor to coach here,” he said. “We had 15 unbelievable years. Great run. The fans supported us, the families entrusted us with their sons.”

Even in victory, his connection to Kentucky remained strong.

“I got 190 texts by the time the game ended. I’m guessing a bunch of them were former players. Not that they’re ever going to root against Kentucky—they went to school here. But they also have a relationship with me.”

What’s Next?

For Arkansas, this win could be a turning point in their season as they look to climb back into contention. Meanwhile, Kentucky will need to regroup and find consistency to make a deep March Madness run.

While Calipari may have won this round, the Wildcats will have another shot at revenge if these two teams meet again in the SEC Tournament.
