The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), Rangers, and Celtic have reached a mutual agreement following escalating security concerns and an impasse over ticket allocations, resulting in a total lock-out of travelling supporters across all Scottish Premiership and Premier Sports Cup fixtures for the rest of the campaign.
The decision stems primarily from the fallout of severe crowd disorder and pitch incursions during last season’s Scottish Cup quarter-final at Ibrox in March, which led to dozens of arrests and left police officers, supporters, and staff members injured.
Tensions escalated ahead of the scheduled cup clash at Ibrox when Rangers proposed slashing Celtic’s away allocation to just 300 seats based on internal risk assessments, a reduction that Celtic rejected before requesting formal mediation and determination from league authorities.
The SPFL and club executives confirmed that this temporary exclusion is necessary to give both teams, Police Scotland, and local safety advisory groups the breathing room required to review and implement key recommendations from an independent security report.
Governing officials emphasized that introducing a blanket policy will provide certainty for matchday logistics and policing while preventing recurring, high-stakes ticketing disputes, with cross-city allocations set to be reassessed ahead of the 2027/28 season.
