Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer has become one of the most pivotal figures for the Buckeyes as they head into the national championship game. After a 28-14 victory over Texas in the Cotton Bowl, Sawyer’s performance was crucial in Ohio State securing their spot in the College Football Playoff title game. Though many fans focus on stars like quarterback Will Howard and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, Sawyer’s impact in the postseason has been undeniable, and he could be the X-factor the Buckeyes need to bring home the championship.

Sawyer’s most memorable moment came in the Cotton Bowl when he scooped up a fumble forced by his former roommate, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, and took it 83 yards for a touchdown. This play effectively sealed the victory for Ohio State, sending them to the title game. In an emotional post-game interview, Sawyer reflected on his close relationship with Ewers, saying, “Quinn was my roommate when he was here, so me and Quinn have a good friendship. I’m excited to play against him. He’s a great player, had a great year, had a great career at Texas.”

Head coach Ryan Day quickly recognized Sawyer’s game-changing performance, calling him “a legend” for his role in the victory. It was a moment that cemented Sawyer’s place in Ohio State history, and it added to his growing legacy as the Buckeyes prepare for their final showdown.

Jack Sawyer’s Performance and Stats

Sawyer’s stats in the Cotton Bowl include three total tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one pass defended. While not the most eye-popping numbers, his performance in key moments, particularly his touchdown return, had a massive impact on the game. Over the season, Sawyer has totaled 56 tackles (24 solo), nine sacks, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, one interception, and six pass breakups. His best individual game came against Northwestern in November, where he recorded seven tackles, one forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Looking at the postseason specifically, Sawyer has been a standout with 10 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and seven pass breakups. His ability to step up in crucial moments shows his value on the field, especially as Ohio State faces its biggest test yet in the title game against Notre Dame.

A Top Recruit

Sawyer entered Ohio State as one of the most highly regarded recruits in the Class of 2021. At 6-foot-5 and 248 pounds, he was a 5-star prospect according to 247Sports and ranked as the No. 6 overall player and the top defensive line prospect in the class. Sawyer was also the top-ranked player in Ohio, making him a standout prospect for the Buckeyes.

As a player, Sawyer’s physical attributes, including his athleticism and ability to move quickly off the line, were evident from an early age. In his scouting report, 247Sports’ Allen Trieu praised his versatility, noting, “A great athlete who is a multi-sport guy and a multi-positional player on the football field.” Sawyer’s blend of strength and speed made him a dominant force on the defensive line, and he’s proven that ability in key games throughout the season.

Looking Ahead

With the national title game approaching, Jack Sawyer’s ability to impact the game in critical moments could determine Ohio State’s success. As a player who has consistently shown up when needed most, he will be a key figure for the Buckeyes in their quest for the national championship. His journey from a top recruit to a potential future NFL prospect has been remarkable, and with one final game to play, Sawyer has a chance to solidify his place as a future standout at the next level.

As Ohio State heads into the most important game of the season, all eyes will be on players like Sawyer, whose performance could propel the Buckeyes to a national title and increase his stock for the upcoming NFL Draft. Whether it’s making a big play on defense or contributing in other ways, Sawyer’s legacy as a Buckeye is already secured, but a national championship could elevate it to even greater heights.
