Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the team has officially agreed to terms with goaltender Aleksei Medvedev on a three-year, entry-level contract. The highly anticipated signing adds depth to the Canucks’ goaltending roster and reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to building a competitive and sustainable team. The 21-year-old Russian netminder has been turning heads in recent seasons and is widely regarded as one of the top up-and-coming goaltenders in international hockey.

Medvedev, who most recently played for CSKA Moscow in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), posted an impressive save percentage and goals-against average that drew attention from numerous NHL scouts. Known for his quick reflexes, calm presence in the crease, and excellent puck-tracking abilities, Medvedev was heavily scouted during the 2024–25 KHL season. Despite playing in a league known for its high-caliber offense, he maintained consistent performances that showcased both his technical skills and mental toughness under pressure.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 200 pounds, Medvedev brings a strong physical presence to the net. His size and athleticism give him a distinct advantage in covering the crease and handling rebound situations. Canucks goaltending coach Ian Clark is expected to play a vital role in Medvedev’s development as he transitions to North American hockey, which has a faster pace and more physical gameplay than what Medvedev experienced in the KHL.

The signing also reflects the Canucks’ strategic planning for the future. With veteran goaltender Thatcher Demko as the current starter, Medvedev is expected to begin his North American career either as a backup in the NHL or as a starter with the Canucks’ AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks. This approach would give him the necessary time to adjust to the smaller ice surface and different playing style while being closely monitored by the organization.

Allvin praised Medvedev’s character and work ethic during today’s announcement, noting that the young goaltender has already demonstrated a level of professionalism and maturity beyond his years. “We believe Aleksei has the tools and mindset to be a key part of our organization’s future,” Allvin said. “His development will be closely supported, and we’re excited to welcome him to the Canucks family.”

With the entry-level contract in place, Medvedev is expected to attend the Canucks’ upcoming development camp, where fans and team officials alike will get an initial look at the promising goaltender in action. The move signals yet another step forward in Vancouver’s long-term vision and offers a glimpse of the next generation of talent aiming to bring success back to the Canucks franchise.
