Ryan Day on Michigan Loss: ‘Grieving Phase’ Was Part of Buckeyes’ Recovery

Ohio State’s hopes for a Big Ten title and a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff were dashed after a tough regular-season loss to Michigan. The defeat marked the Buckeyes’ fourth consecutive loss to their archrival, raising concerns about the program’s national championship prospects and even sparking debate on social media about head coach Ryan Day’s future.

The frustration within the team and fan base was palpable, something Day openly acknowledged while appearing on the Triple Option Podcast with Urban Meyer.

“When you don’t win that game, you don’t just wake up the next day and move on,” Day said. “There’s a mourning and grieving phase that comes with it. You have to take a step back and let the emotions settle.”

Following the loss, Ohio State faced mounting criticism, with narratives swirling online about the state of the program. Day and his staff quickly addressed the situation, bringing the team together before their College Football Playoff opener against Tennessee.

“The truth is, there were specific mistakes made in that game that cost us,” Day admitted. “We had to be honest about it, hold each other accountable, and fix what went wrong.”

Tensions within the program reached a boiling point, with players challenging each other and conflict surfacing. However, Day emphasized that the adversity ultimately strengthened the team’s bond.

“There were moments where guys were going at each other, but by the end of the meeting, they were walking out arm in arm,” Day said. “We talked through the issues and committed to making the necessary changes.”

Despite the setback, Ohio State remained focused on rebounding in the postseason, determined to learn from their mistakes and move forward.
