In a thrilling College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl, No. 6 Ohio State delivered a commanding performance, defeating top-ranked Oregon 41-21. This victory propels the Buckeyes into the semifinals, where they will face No. 4 Texas in the Cotton Bowl on January 10.

First-Half Dominance

Ohio State’s offense was explosive from the outset, scoring 34 points in the first half. Quarterback Will Howard was instrumental, completing 19 of 26 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith made significant contributions, catching two of those touchdown passes. Running back TreVeyon Henderson added a 66-yard touchdown run, showcasing his speed and agility.

The Buckeyes’ efficiency was evident, with all four touchdowns in the first half coming on drives of three plays or fewer, averaging just over a minute per drive. This rapid scoring pace kept Oregon’s defense on its heels throughout the opening half.

Oregon’s Struggles

Oregon’s offense faced significant challenges, particularly in the first half. The Ducks managed only 139 total yards before halftime, with quarterback Dillon Gabriel completing 9 of 17 passes for 88 yards and one touchdown. Running back Noah Whittington contributed with a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but the Ducks’ offense struggled to find rhythm against Ohio State’s defense.

Second Half Adjustment

In the second half, Oregon made adjustments to its offensive strategy. The Ducks mounted an 11-play drive culminating in a 2-yard touchdown run by Whittington, reducing the deficit to 34-15. However, Ohio State’s defense tightened, limiting Oregon’s scoring opportunities and maintaining control of the game.

Key Performances

Will Howard (QB, Ohio State): Led the offense with 269 passing yards and three touchdowns, demonstrating poise and precision.

Jeremiah Smith (WR, Ohio State): Made crucial receptions, including two touchdown catches, contributing significantly to the scoring.

TreVeyon Henderson (RB, Ohio State): Provided a dynamic running threat with a 66-yard touchdown run, showcasing his explosive speed.

Dillon Gabriel (QB, Oregon): Struggled to find consistency, completing 9 of 17 passes for 88 yards and one touchdown.

Noah Whittington (RB, Oregon): Scored both of Oregon’s touchdowns, including a 2-yard run in the second quarter and another in the second half.

Looking Ahead

Ohio State’s victory sets up an exciting semifinal matchup against Texas, promising a high-stakes contest between two powerhouse programs. The Buckeyes’ balanced offense and stout defense will be key as they aim to advance to the national championship game.
