Ohio State Faces Setback: Veteran Defensive Player Joins Transfer Portal Exodus

As the Ohio State football team continues its push in the College Football Playoff, the inevitable roster changes tied to the transfer portal have begun to take shape. Head coach Ryan Day previously anticipated losing around 10% of the roster to the portal following the season, but with the Buckeyes focused on their championship run, those departures have temporarily slowed.

Several players entered the portal after the regular season ended, while others opted to wait until the postseason concluded. Some, like quarterback Devin Brown, remain committed to the team’s playoff efforts despite their intent to transfer. Others have already declared for new opportunities or will do so soon.

Since Ohio State’s victory over Oregon on New Year’s Day, three players have officially entered the transfer portal. Offensive lineman George Fitzpatrick is expected to follow suit shortly. Tight end Patrick Gurd has already made his decision, and now another departure adds to the defensive exodus.

Mitchell Melton Enters Transfer Portal

Senior linebacker Mitchell Melton has decided to enter the transfer portal, seeking a fresh start elsewhere with one year of eligibility remaining. Melton saw limited action this season, recording 12 tackles and two sacks. He joins Gabe Powers, another linebacker who entered the portal after the regular season, in leaving the Buckeyes.

While losing two linebackers does impact depth, Ohio State appears well-positioned to weather the changes. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ scheme typically utilizes just two linebackers at a time, reducing the need for a deep scholarship rotation at the position. The Buckeyes are confident they have enough talent to fill the void next season.

Melton’s departure marks another chapter in the ongoing transfer portal era, where players seek new opportunities for growth and playing time. Ohio State fans and staff alike wish him the best as he pursues his college football future.
