Michigan vs. Alabama: The Game-Changing Strategy No One’s Talking About

The Michigan Wolverines look to close out 2024 with the same magic they started it with—a victory over Alabama. Facing the Crimson Tide in today’s ReliaQuest Bowl (formerly the Outback Bowl), Michigan enters as a 13.5-point underdog with key players sidelined due to NFL declarations. While the fanbase may appear indifferent, a win against a powerhouse like Alabama could be a perfect ending to an up-and-down season.

Here’s how Michigan can pull off the upset:

1. Neutralize Jalen Milroe and Limit Big Plays

Alabama’s quarterback Jalen Milroe is a dual-threat dynamo and a vital cog in the Tide’s offense. Alabama is unbeaten this season when Milroe rushes for over 50 yards. To have a fighting chance, Michigan must mix up their defensive coverages and contain Milroe’s rushing ability.

Despite Alabama’s storied history of dominating on the ground, this year’s team ranks just inside the top 40 in rushing yards per game (182.7). Michigan’s run defense, fourth in the country for most of the season, will face its toughest test yet without Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant. The Wolverines must prevent big-chunk plays and force Alabama to rely on secondary weapons.

2. Showcase Jordan Marshall

Freshman running back Jordan Marshall has shown flashes of brilliance on special teams and now gets the spotlight. Alabama’s run defense isn’t impenetrable, giving up nearly 140 yards per game. If Marshall and fellow backs Ben Hall and Micah Ka’apana can consistently churn out 4-5 yards per carry, Michigan could dominate time of possession and shift momentum.

3. Special Teams Must Shine

Kicker Dominic Zvada has been Michigan’s most reliable scoring option, and his consistency will be pivotal. New punter Hudson Hollenbeck has the opportunity to pin Alabama deep and win the field position battle—an underrated but crucial way to steal games.

Michigan fans don’t need another Rose Bowl-level disaster on special teams, with fumbles and missed opportunities haunting them. Clean execution here could tip the scales in the Wolverines’ favor.

The Bottom Line

Beating Alabama is no small task, but with a disciplined defense, a strong showing from Marshall, and mistake-free special teams, Michigan could finish the season on a high note. Let us know in the comments: What are your keys to victory?
