LATEST NEWS: Gary Payton Honors SuperSonics Legacy by Returning to Oklahoma City and Funding a $25M Youth Academy

NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton has announced his official return to Oklahoma City—not as a player, but as a philanthropist and mentor. The former Seattle SuperSonics legend revealed on Saturday that he will fund a $25 million youth development academy in Oklahoma City, dedicated to honoring the legacy of the now-defunct SuperSonics franchise and inspiring future generations. This surprise initiative, dubbed the “Sonics Legacy Youth Academy,” is already being hailed as a bridge between past glory and future promise.

The Sonics Legacy Youth Academy is expected to offer free basketball training, life skills workshops, education support, and community-building programs for underserved youth across Oklahoma and beyond. Payton, who spent the majority of his playing career with the SuperSonics before the franchise relocated and became the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008, said this was a way to preserve the team’s spirit while investing in the next wave of leaders. “This isn’t just about basketball—it’s about giving kids a shot at life, just like Seattle gave me,” Payton said during the announcement.

Construction on the facility is set to begin in early 2026, with a projected opening by late 2027. The complex will include state-of-the-art courts, academic tutoring centers, a digital media studio, and a museum-style exhibit showcasing Seattle’s basketball legacy, including memorabilia from the SuperSonics era. Payton emphasized that the museum section is especially important as it will educate young players on the deep roots and impact of the SuperSonics, who were a pivotal part of NBA history from 1967 until their controversial relocation.

Oklahoma City officials have enthusiastically embraced the move, with Mayor David Holt calling it “a full-circle moment” that brings healing and unity to a fan base still emotionally connected to its Seattle origins. “While the Thunder have written their own incredible story here in OKC, this project reminds us that history matters—and that we can grow stronger when we embrace all parts of our journey,” Holt stated. Thunder executives are reportedly supportive as well, with some offering collaboration to integrate the academy with local youth outreach efforts.

The announcement also comes amid ongoing conversations about potentially bringing an NBA expansion team back to Seattle, fueling speculation that Payton’s move could be a strategic step in preserving the Sonics’ legacy in both symbolic and practical ways. Some league insiders suggest that Payton may be positioning himself as a key ambassador or stakeholder in a future Seattle team should expansion be approved by the NBA Board of Governors in the coming years.

Gary Payton’s return to Oklahoma City, in this new role as mentor, investor, and cultural bridge, represents more than nostalgia—it’s a bold act of vision and reconciliation. With a legacy built on fiery defense, leadership, and unapologetic authenticity, “The Glove” is now applying that same intensity to uplift a new generation. As construction begins and the Sonics’ spirit rises again—this time in OKC—the lines between past and present blur in the most beautiful way, reminding us that legends never truly leave; they evolve.
