Kane Wommack Explains Why Cam Calhoun is Poised for Success at Alabama

Alabama football recently strengthened its cornerback depth with the addition of Utah transfer Cam Calhoun. After the Crimson Tide’s first practice for the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa on Friday, defensive coordinator Kane Wommack shared his thoughts on how Calhoun can contribute to the team next season.

“We always look for experience when it comes to the transfer portal,” Wommack said. “Calhoun brings that, along with the ability to play multiple positions. He’s a versatile player with the physicality we need.”

Calhoun, who spent the 2024 season at Utah after starting his college career at Michigan, played in 11 games for the Utes. He finished the season with 21 tackles, nine pass breakups, and an interception. The 6-foot, 177-pound cornerback from Ohio brings valuable experience to Alabama’s secondary.

One of the key factors that excited Wommack and the coaching staff was Calhoun’s mindset. “In the transfer portal, it’s crucial to find players who believe they can play at Alabama,” Wommack explained. “A lot of guys are interested, but when it comes down to it, they don’t believe they belong here. Cam, however, walked in with the mentality that he belonged at Alabama.”

This confidence, Wommack believes, is crucial for success at Alabama. “Those are the guys who typically succeed here.”

Although Calhoun won’t play in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Tuesday against Michigan, as he will join the team next season, his arrival gives Alabama a boost for the future. The game is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT at Raymond James Stadium and will be broadcast on ESPN.
