“We’re not done yet.”
That was it. Standing on the court, confetti falling, ACC Tournament trophy secured for the second straight year, Duke head coach Jon Scheyer grabbed the microphone and looked directly into the eyes of every team that will face his Blue Devils in March. Three words. No celebration speech. No reflecting on the journey. Just a warning.
And given what just happened in Charlotte, the rest of college basketball should be listening very carefully.
Duke outlasted Virginia 74-70 in one of the most gripping ACC Tournament finals in recent memory, a game featuring 12 ties and 16 lead changes that went down to the final 3.9 seconds. Cameron Boozer, the ACC Player of the Year and tournament MVP, shot a season-worst 3 of 17 from the field, had two starters sidelined with foot injuries, and still found a way to win.
Scheyer watched all of it and came away more impressed, not less.
“I went into this week determined to win, but also wanted to learn something new,” he said. “I learned some new things about these guys.”
What he learned first was that Duke can win ugly. Boozer finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists despite being hounded and swatted all night by Virginia’s Ugonna Onyenso, who set an ACC Tournament record with 21 blocks in three games. Nine of those came Saturday night against Boozer specifically. It was as physically dominant a defensive performance as the tournament has seen in years.
Most players crack under that kind of treatment. Boozer did not.
“Most players would have been mad and showed it,” Onyenso himself said with genuine respect in his voice. “But he did a really good job composing himself and stayed locked into the game. Most players, that would have been the reason they lose a game.”
Scheyer saw the same thing from the sideline and was characteristically blunt about it.
“We’re spoiled,” he said, laughing. “I’m spoiled because he’s 13-8-8 and it’s like, that’s an off night for him. It just is. He’s really spoiled us with his consistency.”
Thirteen points. Eight rebounds. Eight assists. On his worst shooting night of the season. That is the standard Cameron Boozer has set inside Scheyer’s program, and the coach knows exactly how rare that is.
The second thing Scheyer learned was about depth. With Caleb Foster out with a right foot fracture and Patrick Ngongba sidelined with right foot soreness, Duke turned to Cayden Boozer and Nikolas Khamenia to fill the void. They delivered. Cayden matched his career high with 16 points, playing all 40 minutes and providing the decisive moment of the entire game, an offensive rebound put-back with 2:49 remaining that gave Duke a lead they would not surrender. Khamenia added nine points and six rebounds in 32 minutes. Isaiah Evans, ice cold in the final two minutes, hit four consecutive free throws when the game was on the line and finished with a game-high 20 points.
This is what Scheyer has built. Not a one-man show. Not a team that lives and dies with its star. A program with enough trust, enough depth and enough collective will to win even when nothing is going according to plan.
“Everything we want to accomplish,” Cameron Boozer said after accepting the tournament MVP trophy, “we definitely can.”
Scheyer did not need to add anything to that. He already said everything that mattered.
Duke is six wins away from a national championship. Last year’s squad, loaded with five future NBA Draft picks, stumbled in the Final Four and that memory has never left this program. Scheyer carries it. His players carry it. It sits underneath everything they do.
The ACC Tournament trophy is in the case. The confetti has been swept up. And somewhere in the bracket, 67 other teams just heard those three words and felt something shift in their stomach.
