The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Tony DeAngelo to a one-year deal for a prorated portion of the league minimum salary of $775,000. The move comes as the Islanders attempt to patch up their injury-depleted blue line.
The team announced the signing on Friday, a timely addition given the absence of key defensemen Noah Dobson, who is listed as week-to-week with a leg injury sustained Monday, and Mike Reilly, who is recovering from heart surgery. DeAngelo, currently on waivers, could join the lineup as early as Saturday if he clears waivers on Friday.
A Polarizing Return to New York
DeAngelo, a 29-year-old defenseman and New Jersey native, has built a reputation as both a skilled player and a lightning rod for controversy during his NHL career. His most recent stint was with SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL, where he tallied an impressive 32 points in 34 games. Before heading overseas, DeAngelo played 34 games for the Carolina Hurricanes last season, appearing in nine playoff games and recording two assists.
DeAngelo’s return to New York is particularly notable given his tumultuous exit from the Rangers in 2021. Drafted 19th overall in 2014, DeAngelo played for the Rangers from 2017 to 2021 but was released following a highly publicized incident. During the COVID-affected 2020-21 season, a confrontation with then-assistant GM Chris Drury and a heated exchange with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev after a costly turnover led to his removal from the team. The Rangers ultimately bought out the final year of his contract.
Islanders’ Need for Depth
Despite DeAngelo’s controversial past, the Islanders are in dire need of reinforcements on the blue line. His offensive skills could prove valuable for the team’s struggling power play, which has ranked last in the league for much of the season. With injuries leaving significant gaps in their lineup, the Islanders hope DeAngelo can make an immediate impact.
The move also represents a potential turning point for DeAngelo’s career. After failing to secure an NHL deal before this season and resorting to a stint in the KHL, he now has the opportunity to reestablish himself in the league.
