As the New York Jets prepare to close out a disappointing season with a matchup against the Miami Dolphins, quarterback Aaron Rodgers is approaching the game as though it could be his last in the NFL.
“Yeah, of course, yeah,” Rodgers said when asked if he’s considering retirement.
The 2024 season has been a nightmare for both Rodgers and the Jets. The team extended its postseason drought to 14 years, posting a dismal 4-12 record, which led to the firing of both head coach and general manager. Despite high expectations when Rodgers was acquired in 2023, his return from injury didn’t deliver the boost the Jets had hoped for.
Rodgers completed 63.0% of his passes for 3,623 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, marking only the fourth time in his 17-year career as a starter that he reached double-digit interceptions.
When asked directly about retirement, Rodgers emphasized the need for rest before making a decision. “I need a break mentally, and I don’t want to decide until I’ve been able to rest mentally and physically,” he told reporters.
Rodgers acknowledged that his future might not be entirely in his hands. “I think there’s going to be change here, and if I’m part of that change, I just want to express my gratitude for my time here,” he added.
With the Jets entering the offseason under new leadership, the relationship between Rodgers and the franchise remains uncertain. Reports suggest a split could be likely, given Rodgers’ struggles this season and a reportedly strained relationship with owner Woody Johnson. Whether Rodgers will return for another season—or if the Dolphins game will mark the end of his storied career—remains to be seen.
