Is Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith the Next Big Thing to Replace a $140 Million NFL Playmaker?

Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith’s NFL draft prospects are drawing attention, even though the playmaker isn’t eligible to turn pro until 2027. There’s already speculation that, had the rules allowed, the freshman could have been one of the top picks in the 2025 draft. However, Smith will have at least two more college seasons before he can enter the draft.

Athlon Sports draft analyst Luke Easterling highlighted potential landing spots for Smith, with the New York Jets emerging as a plausible destination. Easterling noted that several veteran wide receivers, including Cooper Kupp (Rams), Davante Adams (Jets), and Tyreek Hill (Dolphins), will be over 32 years old when Smith is ready for the pros, making these teams possible future fits for the young star.

As the Jets face uncertainty around Aaron Rodgers’ future, Smith is seen as a potential long-term replacement for Davante Adams, whose five-year, $140 million contract runs through 2026. Heading into the national title game, Smith had an impressive 71 receptions, 1,227 yards, and 14 touchdowns in the 2024 season.

Smith, who has already connected with NFL stars like Stefon Diggs and Odell Beckham Jr., is also cousins with Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith. Sharing advice from his cousin, Smith emphasized the importance of faith: “Keep God first and keep the main thing the main thing,” he said during an interview with Athlon Sports.
