Game-Changer or Sideline Spectator? The Latest on Abdul Carter’s Injury and His Impact on Penn State’s Playoff Hopes

It remains uncertain whether Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter will suit up when the sixth-seeded Nittany Lions (13-2) face seventh-seeded Notre Dame (13-1) in their College Football Playoff semifinal. Despite the uncertainty, teammates and coaches are optimistic about his potential return.

Carter, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, sustained an upper-body injury during Penn State’s 31-14 victory over third-seeded Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. His availability for Thursday’s Orange Bowl against the Fighting Irish is still in question.

“I don’t think there’s anything stopping him from playing,” said Penn State head coach James Franklin on Saturday. “But it’s about how he’s able to play. We’ll see, but his mentality is great. He’s excited about this week, but it’s too early to say definitively.”

Carter appeared to injure his shoulder or arm in the first quarter against Boise State. After a brief return to the game, he exited for good in the second quarter. Known for his durability, Carter has never missed a game in his three-year collegiate career. This season, he ranks second among FBS players with 21.5 tackles for loss and leads Penn State with 11 sacks, adding 63 total tackles to his impressive resume.

Franklin praised Carter’s attitude and determination, noting, “His mentality has been really good. It’s going to come down to how he feels and how much practice he can get this week.”

Penn State began preparing for Notre Dame on Friday and scheduled another practice for Sunday after a day off. While Carter’s presence is vital, the Nittany Lions have depth at defensive end, with Amin Vanover, Smith Vilbert, and freshman Max Granville stepping up throughout the season.
