Dominating the Trenches: How Penn State’s 2025 Offensive Line Depth Could Shape a Championship Run

Heading into the 2025 season, Penn State’s offensive line appears to be one of the strongest units on the team. While the running back duo of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen presents a compelling argument, the offensive line, which was a key strength in 2024, retains nearly all of its contributors. With only one departure from the regular rotation, the Nittany Lions’ front line is set to build on last year’s success.

Sal Wormley’s Departure and Returning Talent

The only starter not returning is right guard Sal Wormley, who had an impressive career with 42 consecutive starts. Wormley, now aiming for a career in the NFL, leaves behind a line that allowed just 20 sacks over 16 games in 2024. The unit’s performance peaked in the latter part of the season, helping Singleton and Allen each surpass 1,000 rushing yards during the College Football Playoff run.

Position-by-Position Breakdown

Left Tackle

Drew Shelton returns to anchor the line after a consistent 2024 season, where he allowed only two sacks. He’ll have the opportunity to further establish himself as a top-tier tackle. JB Nelson, who confirmed his return for 2025, will continue to be a vital rotational player, and 2024 freshman Eagan Boyer is expected to push for playing time. Additionally, former top recruit J’ven Williams remains a hopeful prospect for development.

Left Guard

Vega Ioane, who started all 16 games in 2024, holds a firm grip on the left guard spot. Known for his physical play, Ioane fits perfectly into Andy Kotelnicki’s offensive scheme. Cooper Cousins, who backed up multiple interior positions, is expected to continue his development, potentially in a more significant role. Texas A&M transfer TJ Shanahan, with three years of eligibility, adds depth and competition at guard.

Center

Nick Dawkins is set to return as the starting center following a standout 2024 season. Ioane and Cousins provide depth, with walk-on Dom Rulli adding further reinforcement. This continuity should help stabilize the line’s interior.

Right Guard

With Wormley’s departure, the right guard position is open for competition. Cousins is a frontrunner to fill the spot, with Shanahan and Nelson also in the mix. Younger players like Alex Birchmeier, Chimdy Onoh, Donnie Harbour, and Caleb Brewer could also push for playing time as they develop.

Right Tackle

The right tackle position may be the strongest on the line. Anthony Donkoh, a rising star, will look to reclaim his spot after a late-season injury. However, Wisconsin transfer Nolan Rucci, who excelled in Donkoh’s absence, will likely start in 2025. Nelson, Boyer, and freshman Garrett Sexton provide additional depth and versatility.

Incoming Freshmen

The 2025 class includes four new offensive linemen: Michael Troutman, Owen Aliciene, Malachi Goodman, and Brady O’Hara. While contributing as a freshman lineman is challenging, Goodman, fresh off his All-America Bowl appearance, has the highest potential among the newcomers. These young players will be crucial for the future but may not see significant action immediately.

Conclusion

With a wealth of returning talent and promising depth, Penn State’s offensive line is well-positioned to be a cornerstone of the team’s success in 2025. The combination of seasoned veterans and rising stars ensures that the Nittany Lions will continue to protect their quarterbacks and pave the way for their dynamic running backs.
