Dolphins’ Playoff Hopes Hang by a Thread, Calais Campbell’s Future in Limbo

The Miami Dolphins face a precarious situation this weekend, as their playoff aspirations could end as soon as today. If both the Chargers defeat the Patriots and the Broncos beat the Bengals, the Dolphins will be eliminated from contention. Additionally, a loss to the Browns on Sunday would also seal Miami’s fate.

If the Dolphins are officially out, veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell is expected to be released, according to Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald. Campbell, who has openly acknowledged the possibility of being cut once Miami’s season ends, would be placed on waivers. This would allow any team—contender or non-contender—to claim him for the final week of the regular season and potentially beyond. If he goes unclaimed, Campbell would become a free agent.

Earlier this season, the Baltimore Ravens reportedly expressed interest in trading for Campbell before the November trade deadline. However, Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel convinced Campbell to remain with the team, promising he would be released if Miami’s playoff hopes were extinguished.

The Ravens are expected to be among the teams interested in Campbell if he becomes available. Other potential suitors include the Vikings, Lions, and Chiefs. Campbell, who has been vocal about his desire to win a championship, might find Kansas City the most appealing option.

“My whole career I’ve been close, but no cigar,” Campbell said, as quoted by Kelly. “I want that cigar.”

The situation could become complicated if Miami remains in playoff contention after this weekend. It would be challenging for Campbell to leave the team while a postseason berth is still mathematically possible, even if the Dolphins ultimately fall short or exit early in the playoffs.

Adding to the complexity, NFL rules stipulate that Miami’s roster will lock as soon as their season officially ends. If the Dolphins are eliminated in Week 18, Campbell cannot be released at that point.

This creates an intriguing subplot heading into the final two weeks of the 2024 regular season. Should Miami’s hopes crumble early, any non-contending team could claim Campbell on waivers, disrupting his pursuit of a championship with a contender. For now, all eyes are on the Dolphins’ playoff fate—and the future of one of the league’s most respected veteran players.
