The 1996 Citrus Bowl remains one of college football’s most memorable matchups, featuring two powerhouse programs—Ohio State and Tennessee—in their only meeting to date. The game had all the ingredients for an instant classic, from star players like Eddie George and Peyton Manning to unforgettable moments and controversies.

Ohio State, led by Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, entered the game with high expectations. George had dominated throughout the season, making the Buckeyes’ offense one of the most feared in the nation. On the other side, Tennessee boasted a young and talented Peyton Manning, who was already showcasing the poise and skill that would define his Hall of Fame career.

The game itself was a hard-fought battle, with Tennessee ultimately emerging victorious, defeating Ohio State 20-14. Manning’s precision passing proved to be the difference, as he connected with Joey Kent for a pivotal touchdown that sealed the game for the Volunteers.

Adding to the drama was a controversy surrounding Ohio State’s cleats, which some argued were ill-suited for the Florida turf, contributing to the Buckeyes’ struggles.

Though over two decades have passed, the 1996 Citrus Bowl remains a cherished memory for fans of both programs, a game that showcased future legends and left its mark on college football history.
