Former NFL star and Texas Tech legend Michael Crabtree has announced the establishment of a monumental $18.5 million scholarship fund for student-athletes at his alma mater. This initiative, the largest of its kind ever launched by a former college football player, sets a historic precedent and ushers in a new era of athlete-driven philanthropy in college athletics.

Crabtree, who electrified the nation during his time as a Red Raider and went on to have a successful career in the NFL, revealed the scholarship fund in an emotional press conference held at Jones AT&T Stadium. Surrounded by former teammates, university officials, and community leaders, Crabtree described the fund as his “thank you” to the school and community that helped shape his life. “Texas Tech gave me the platform to chase my dreams,” he said. “Now, I want to give others the same chance—no matter their background.”

The scholarship fund will focus on supporting underprivileged and minority student-athletes, with an emphasis on academic performance, leadership, and community involvement. According to Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec, the donation will directly fund tuition, housing, books, and career development resources for hundreds of student-athletes over the coming decades. “This isn’t just a donation—it’s a transformational act of leadership and love,” Schovanec said. “Michael Crabtree is changing lives.”

What sets this initiative apart from traditional alumni gifts is its expansive vision. The fund includes a mentorship program led by former professional athletes and a first-of-its-kind financial literacy curriculum. It will also provide emergency grants for student-athletes facing personal or family hardships, offering a holistic support system that goes beyond the playing field. Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt hailed the fund as “a national model for what former athletes can do to elevate the next generation.”

Reactions from across the NCAA have been swift and overwhelmingly positive. Multiple athletic directors and conference officials have praised the move, calling it a wake-up call for how alumni can impact their schools in tangible and lasting ways. Rumors are already circulating that other former college stars—including several Heisman Trophy winners—are exploring similar philanthropic initiatives.

For Michael Crabtree, however, the motivation is deeply personal. “I was once that kid with big dreams and no idea how to pay for school,” he said. “I made it—but I want to make sure others don’t have to walk that road alone.” As Texas Tech celebrates this unprecedented act of generosity, one thing is clear: Michael Crabtree has just changed the game—again.
