BREAKING: Joel Wyatt Commits to Tennessee Volunteers, Flips Decommitment from Oklahoma Sooners over Georgia, and Sends Shockwaves Through the SEC

4-star linebacker Joel Wyatt has officially flipped his commitment from the Oklahoma Sooners to the Tennessee Volunteers, choosing the SEC powerhouse over fierce competition from Georgia. The highly sought-after defensive standout had previously given a strong verbal pledge to Oklahoma, but after a series of behind-the-scenes developments and key visits, Wyatt has decided Rocky Top is where he belongs. This move is being seen as a massive win for Tennessee’s recruiting class and a significant blow to Brent Venables’ plans for his 2025 defense.

Wyatt, hailing from Buford, Georgia, had long been on the radar of top programs across the country. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing in at 225 pounds, he’s been widely recognized for his sideline-to-sideline speed, high football IQ, and aggressive tackling style. Oklahoma had secured an early commitment from him in the spring, but his recruitment remained far from over as SEC schools, particularly Tennessee and Georgia, continued to apply pressure.

Sources close to Wyatt say that his official visit to Knoxville earlier this summer played a crucial role in swaying his decision. The energy of the fanbase, the defensive vision laid out by head coach Josh Heupel and defensive coordinator Tim Banks, and the opportunity to play early in a high-octane conference all reportedly contributed to his change of heart. Wyatt himself stated, “Tennessee just felt like home. I could see myself thriving there, on and off the field.”

The Georgia Bulldogs, who made a late push to keep the Georgia native close to home, were considered a serious threat up until the final days. However, insiders suggest that Tennessee’s staff built a stronger, more consistent relationship with Wyatt and his family throughout the process. The Volunteers’ recent success in recruiting top-tier defensive talent may have helped seal the deal, showcasing a trajectory that aligns with Wyatt’s aspirations.

Oklahoma fans were understandably disappointed by the news, especially considering the program’s recent emphasis on reloading its defense before heading into another competitive Big 12 campaign. Losing a player of Wyatt’s caliber so close to signing day is a tough pill to swallow, especially to an SEC rival. However, the Sooners are expected to pivot quickly, with several other linebacker prospects still on their radar.

For Tennessee, Wyatt’s commitment is not only a huge boost to their 2025 class rankings but also a clear message that the Volunteers are back in business when it comes to competing with the best in the country. With the addition of Wyatt, Tennessee continues to build momentum under Heupel’s leadership, solidifying its position as one of the most aggressive and successful recruiting programs in the nation.
