Bears Coach Matt Eberflus Under Fire After Costly Game Management Mistake—Here’s What He Said

In the aftermath of the Chicago Bears’ 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day, Head Coach Matt Eberflus faced intense scrutiny over his late-game decision-making, particularly his choice not to utilize the team’s remaining timeout during the final offensive play.

Addressing the media postgame, Eberflus defended his strategy, stating, “I think we handled it the right way… I do believe that we just re-rack the play, get it in bounds and call a timeout. That’s why we called it; it just didn’t work out the way we wanted it to.”

Despite his defense, Eberflus accepted responsibility for the outcome, acknowledging, “The accountability starts with me, and I have to be better.”

The locker room atmosphere post-defeat was reportedly tense, with players expressing frustration over the perceived mismanagement.

Pro Bowl cornerback Jaylon Johnson was notably vocal, questioning the rationale behind not stopping the clock to strategize effectively.

This loss marked the Bears’ sixth consecutive defeat, intensifying calls from fans and analysts for a change in leadership.

ESPN’s Louis Riddick labeled Eberflus’ postgame remarks as “embarrassing,” reflecting widespread sentiment regarding the coach’s decisions.

In response to the mounting pressure, the Bears’ management took decisive action, relieving Eberflus of his duties the following day.

Offensive Coordinator Thomas Brown was appointed as interim head coach, tasked with steering the team through the remainder of a challenging season.

As the Bears prepare for upcoming matchups, the focus shifts to regrouping under new leadership, addressing the issues that have plagued their season, and restoring confidence among players and fans alike.

The team’s ability to adapt and respond to this mid-season coaching change will be pivotal in determining their trajectory moving forward.
