Marcus Freeman Blames Costly Missteps for Notre Dame’s Heartbreaking Loss to Ohio State

Following Notre Dame’s 34-23 loss to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff National Championship, head coach Marcus Freeman took full responsibility for the errors that plagued his team. Flanked by quarterback Riley Leonard and senior linebacker Jack Kiser, Freeman acknowledged the miscommunications and mistakes that created an insurmountable 24-point deficit in the third quarter.

“Those kinds of mistakes against a great team cost points,” Freeman said. “It’s on me to ensure we’re better prepared.”

Notre Dame, aiming for its first national title since 1988, saw its 13-game winning streak snapped. Despite an impressive opening drive led by Leonard, the offense struggled, with Leonard managing only one pass over five yards in the first half. He finished the game with two passing touchdowns and one rushing, but lamented the mistakes that hindered their performance.

“We couldn’t rely on running Riley every play,” Freeman explained. “Penalties and a muffed snap in subsequent drives cost us momentum.”

Ohio State capitalized, with quarterback Will Howard completing 13 consecutive passes and freshman Jeremiah Smith making a crucial 56-yard reception late in the game to set up a decisive field goal.

Despite the loss, Kiser reflected on his time at Notre Dame, highlighting the camaraderie and leadership that defined his experience. Freeman, moved by his players’ dedication, emphasized the need for better preparation moving forward, acknowledging the impact his team has had on him.

“We must be better,” Freeman concluded. “These young men have made me better, and it’s my job to ensure we’re ready for the next opportunity.”
