Naomi Osaka Retires Following Tiebreak Loss to Bencic

In a surprising turn of events at the Australian Open, two-time champion Naomi Osaka retired from her third-round match against Belinda Bencic after losing the first set in a tiebreak.

Osaka initially led the set 5-3, displaying her characteristic powerful baseline play. However, she began to modify her service motion, indicating possible discomfort. Bencic seized the opportunity, breaking back and leveling the score. Osaka then took a medical timeout, during which she received treatment for an apparent abdominal issue. Despite her efforts, Bencic secured the tiebreak 7-3 after 57 minutes of play. Following the set, Osaka approached the chair umpire and announced her decision to retire from the match.

This incident mirrors a recent occurrence at the ASB Classic in Auckland, where Osaka retired from the final against Clara Tauson due to an abdominal injury after winning the first set. These consecutive retirements raise concerns about her fitness ahead of upcoming tournaments.

Bencic, the 2016 Olympic champion, advances to the Round of 16, marking her first appearance at this stage in a major since the 2023 US Open. She is set to face either World No.3 Coco Gauff or Leylah Fernandez in the next round. Bencic expressed sympathy for Osaka, stating, “It’s always tough to see a fellow player retire due to injury. I wish Naomi a speedy recovery.”

The tennis community awaits further updates on Osaka’s condition, hoping for her swift return to full health and competitive play.
