Jeff Ulbrich Interviewed for Jets Head Coach—Could He Be the Team’s Next Leader?

The New York Jets have officially completed an interview with Jeff Ulbrich for their head coach vacancy. Ulbrich, who stepped in as interim head coach during the 2024 NFL season, is now a contender for the permanent role.

Ulbrich took over the reins on October 8, following the dismissal of Robert Saleh, leading the team through a challenging 3-9 stretch. Despite the record, the Jets closed their season with a 32-20 victory over the Miami Dolphins, showcasing potential under Ulbrich’s leadership.

Reflecting on his interim tenure, Ulbrich said, “It was very challenging but also very rewarding. The results weren’t what we wanted, but I learned a lot about myself, this team, and the nuances of coaching and leadership.”

Ulbrich’s coaching journey began with the Seattle Seahawks as an assistant special teams coordinator (2010-2011), followed by a stint at UCLA as a linebackers coach and special teams coordinator (2012-2014). He returned to the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons, serving as linebackers coach (2015-2019) and then as defensive coordinator in 2020. In January 2021, he joined the Jets as defensive coordinator, guiding them to two top-five defensive finishes, including a third-place finish in 2023, with standout performances from players like Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner.

During his time as interim head coach, Ulbrich broadened his involvement beyond defense, engaging with key offensive players such as Aaron Rodgers and Garrett Wilson. “This culture is right in terms of the process,” he said. “Winning consistently will cure the challenges we face, turning potential into lasting success.”

A California native, Ulbrich had a standout collegiate career, culminating in a record-setting senior year at the University of Hawaii. Drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 2000, he played 10 seasons, amassing over 500 tackles.

Jets Chairman Woody Johnson is spearheading the search for a new head coach and general manager, with support from The 33rd Team to identify and vet top candidates.
