Pressure Builds for Georgia to Part Ways with Kirby Smart’s Closest Ally After Sugar Bowl Setback

In a disappointing 23-10 defeat to Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, Georgia’s offensive struggles were on full display. Despite playing without star quarterback Carson Beck, who was sidelined with an injury, and backup Gunner Stockton stepping in, the performance of offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has come under intense scrutiny.

Bobo, who is in his second year as Georgia’s offensive coordinator, is no stranger to the program, having been part of the team’s staff previously and serving as the Bulldogs’ quarterback from 1994 to 1997. During his playing days, he threw for over 6,300 yards and had a strong senior year with 2,751 yards, 19 touchdowns, and a completion rate of 65%. However, his transition to the offensive coordinator role has not been smooth.

Under Bobo’s leadership, the Bulldogs’ offense has taken a noticeable step back. Georgia ranked 43rd in total offense in 2024, averaging 413.8 yards per game, a significant drop from their top-five ranking in the previous two seasons. Fans had already been critical of Bobo’s performance throughout the year, and with the team’s lackluster performance in the Sugar Bowl, the calls for his departure have grown louder.

Even before the postseason, many had speculated that Bobo might be on the chopping block. However, after such a lackluster showing in the playoff, the pressure has reached a boiling point.

As ESPN’s Paul Finebaum noted on Friday’s “Get Up,” fans are not placing the blame on head coach Kirby Smart, but squarely on Bobo’s shoulders. Finebaum remarked, “He’s Kirby Smart’s best friend. They were roommates, and many believe that Kirby is overlooking reality and simply honoring a friend who once worked for Mark Richt before moving on and failing as a head coach.”

Despite the close personal connection between Smart and Bobo, Georgia fans are frustrated with the team’s offensive woes. Following the dismal showing against Notre Dame, it seems clear that the pressure is mounting for Smart to reconsider Bobo’s role for next season. With the Bulldogs failing to find any offensive rhythm in the high-stakes bowl game, the questions about Bobo’s future at Georgia will only intensify.

Get Mike Bobo and Glenn Schumann out of Athens please

If Kirby doesn’t dump Mike Bobo after this season, I’d be shocked.
