Nobody is talking about the children.

More than 45,000 fans packed Suncorp Stadium for Round 1. Families. Fathers with sons on their shoulders. Mothers in team colours with daughters clutching hot chips. This is what the NRL markets itself on. This is the image the game sells to the world.

And then the siren sounded.

Video circulating after the Panthers’ shutout shows three men engaged in a violent altercation in the stadium concourse, with a female Broncos supporter joining in and kicking a Panthers fan. Separate smaller fights broke out nearby, while one man desperately tried to intervene, heard yelling “Stop, stop, enough, enough.”

Nobody stopped.

Somewhere in that corridor, a little kid in a Panthers jersey and a little kid in a Broncos jersey stood watching grown adults throw punches over a football game. Two different teams. Two different families. One shared trauma. Because in that moment it did not matter which jersey you were wearing. Fear looks the same on every child.

That image does not make the headlines. The brawl does. The bans do. The police investigation does. But those two kids standing there watching each other across a corridor full of chaos? That is the story nobody is telling.

The Broncos released a statement condemning the behaviour and warning those involved of significant sanctions, including long-term bans from attending NRL matches. The club called rugby league a game for families. They are right. Which is precisely why this cuts so deep.

Queensland Police and Suncorp Stadium management are continuing their investigations, with the Broncos supporting any appropriate action taken. Bans will likely follow. Charges may follow. The video will eventually disappear from timelines.

But those two kids in their jerseys will not forget what they saw.

The Panthers won 26-0 on the field. In the concourse, everyone lost. Both clubs lost. Both sets of fans lost. The game lost.

And two little kids in rival jerseys lost something they should never have had to lose at a football game.

Their sense of safety.
