Panthers Lock Down Conn Smythe Winner in $64M Extension: Sam Bennett Signs Eight-Year Contract

Sam Bennett Inks Eight-Year Deal: Panthers Lock Down Conn Smythe Winner in $64M Extension

The Florida Panthers have signed 2025 Conn Smythe Trophy winner Sam Bennett to a massive eight-year, $64 million contract extension. The deal, which carries an annual average value (AAV) of $8 million, ensures that one of the team’s most vital playoff performers remains a central figure in the franchise’s plans through the 2033-34 season. Bennett’s gritty, two-way play and timely offensive contributions were instrumental in Florida’s back-to-back Stanley Cup championships, culminating in his Conn Smythe-winning performance this past postseason.

Bennett, who originally joined the Panthers via trade from the Calgary Flames in 2021, has blossomed in Florida’s high-octane system. After years of inconsistency in Calgary, Bennett found his identity with the Panthers—combining his physical edge with offensive instincts to become one of the league’s most dangerous playoff performers. His 2025 postseason stat line—11 goals, 15 assists, and countless momentum-shifting plays—was a major reason the Panthers secured their second consecutive Cup.

The extension not only rewards Bennett for his invaluable contributions but also signals Florida’s commitment to keeping its championship core intact. General Manager Bill Zito praised Bennett’s leadership and playoff mettle, calling him “the heart of this team when it matters most.” With cornerstone players like Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, and now Bennett locked into long-term deals, the Panthers have clearly prioritized continuity as they aim for an unprecedented three-peat in the salary cap era.

However, Bennett’s new contract further tightens the financial pressure already gripping the Panthers. Reports suggest Florida is $4–5 million over the salary cap for the 2025-26 season. With big contracts on the books and key depth players seeking raises, Zito will be forced to make some tough decisions in the coming weeks. Rumors are already swirling about possible trades or buyouts to create cap space without dismantling the championship nucleus.

Despite the looming financial challenges, Bennett’s deal is being widely celebrated among Panthers fans and analysts. His chemistry with teammates, particularly during high-stakes games, has made him a fan favorite in South Florida. With this extension, the Panthers not only secure a premier playoff performer but also send a message to the rest of the league: they’re not satisfied with two Cups—they want a dynasty.

As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on how the Panthers navigate the cap crunch while preparing for the historic task of a three-peat. With Bennett now locked in and riding high off a Conn Smythe-winning campaign, Florida’s championship window remains wide open—provided they can keep the rest of their puzzle intact.
