ESPN REPORTS: Arkansas Razorbacks to Erect Statue at Bud Walton Arena Honoring Corliss Williamson for His Legacy and Impact on Franchise Greatness

The University of Arkansas has announced plans to erect a statue of Corliss Williamson outside Bud Walton Arena, celebrating his lasting legacy and unparalleled contributions to the Razorbacks basketball program. The news, confirmed by ESPN, marks a historic moment for the Arkansas athletics community, recognizing a figure who not only dominated on the court but also left an indelible mark on the program’s identity and success.

Corliss “Big Nasty” Williamson was the heart and soul of the Razorbacks during the program’s golden era in the mid-1990s. Leading the team to a national championship in 1994 and a return to the title game in 1995, Williamson became a household name through his unmatched intensity, scoring ability, and leadership. His powerful presence in the paint and relentless work ethic made him a fan favorite and a nightmare for opponents, cementing his legacy as one of college basketball’s all-time greats.

University officials and Razorback Athletics made the announcement during a press conference held at Bud Walton Arena, where they unveiled a preliminary design of the statue and announced that it will be installed by the start of the upcoming season. The statue will depict Williamson in his iconic #34 jersey, mid-celebration pose, symbolizing the energy and determination that defined his tenure. Athletic Director Hunter Yurachek praised the move as a “long overdue recognition of a true Razorback icon.”

Williamson, who was present at the announcement, expressed deep gratitude and humility, crediting his teammates, coaches, and the Arkansas fanbase for supporting him throughout his career. “This isn’t just a statue of me,” Williamson said. “It’s a tribute to all of us who wore that Razorback jersey with pride. It represents an era when we believed we could achieve anything—because we did.” His remarks were met with loud cheers and a standing ovation from alumni, students, and fans in attendance.

Beyond his college achievements, Corliss Williamson went on to enjoy a successful NBA career, including a Sixth Man of the Year award and an NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004. He later returned to coaching, continuing to mentor young players and giving back to the sport that shaped his life. His continued involvement with basketball and the Razorback community has only strengthened his status as a beloved ambassador of the game and the university.

The statue is expected to become a new landmark for Razorback fans, a rallying point that celebrates the grit, glory, and greatness of Arkansas basketball. As the university prepares to honor Williamson with this permanent tribute, fans and players alike are reminded of the enduring power of legacy—and how one player’s passion can lift an entire program to legendary heights.
