Former Basketball Legend Scott Skiles Donates $18.2 Million to Tom Izzo for New Stadium Project: “Spartan Pride Lives Within Me Wherever I Go”

Former NBA player and Spartan basketball legend Scott Skiles has announced a record-breaking $18.2 million donation to head coach Tom Izzo for the construction of a new basketball arena. The gift, the largest of its kind ever made to the Spartans’ athletic department by a former player, will support the transformation of MSU’s basketball facilities and set a new standard for alumni contributions to collegiate athletics.

Skiles, who starred for Michigan State in the 1980s before going on to a distinguished NBA playing and coaching career, made the announcement in East Lansing during a special press event held at the Breslin Center. Standing beside Coach Izzo, Skiles described his deep connection to the university and reflected on how his time as a Spartan shaped him both personally and professionally. “Spartan pride lives within me wherever I go,” Skiles said emotionally. “This is about giving back to the program and community that gave me so much.”

The donation will fund a state-of-the-art facility designed to meet the growing needs of Michigan State’s basketball programs. The new arena will include enhanced training centers, expanded locker rooms, advanced medical and recovery spaces, and upgraded fan amenities. More than just a sports venue, the stadium is envisioned as a hub for student-athletes’ development and a symbol of MSU’s commitment to excellence in athletics.

Tom Izzo, who has led the Spartans for over two decades and brought national acclaim to the program, called Skiles’ donation “a moment of legacy and love.” He praised Skiles not only for his historic contribution but also for his continued loyalty to the Spartan community. “Scott is a true Spartan,” Izzo said. “This gift isn’t just about buildings. It’s about belief in the future of Michigan State basketball and investing in generations of players yet to come.”

Skiles’ donation marks a significant turning point in the university’s fundraising campaign for athletic infrastructure. University officials noted that the new stadium will bear a name reflecting Skiles’ enduring legacy, pending final approval. The groundbreaking is expected to take place early next year, with completion projected within two years. The project has already energized alumni, fans, and boosters alike, with many pledging to follow Skiles’ lead in supporting the vision.

In closing, Skiles emphasized that the contribution is a testament to the enduring values Michigan State instilled in him. “It’s about passion, loyalty, and gratitude,” he said. “My journey started here, and I want future Spartans to know that no matter where life takes you, you never really leave Michigan State behind.” As a new era begins for MSU basketball, Skiles’ legacy now stands as both a symbol of past glory and a foundation for future greatness.
