Greg Swindell has been honored as the Greatest College Baseball Player of All Time by ESPN, surpassing other legends such as Florida’s Jax Caglianone, LSU’s Todd Walker, and Florida State’s Buster Posey. This distinction was determined through a fan vote conducted on ESPN.com and announced during a special reveal show on ESPNU.

Swindell’s collegiate career at the University of Texas was marked by exceptional achievements. From 1984 to 1986, he compiled a 43โ€“8 record with a 1.92 ERA, recording 14 shutouts and 501 strikeoutsโ€”both of which remain program records. He also threw two no-hitters and completed 32 of his 50 starts. His remarkable performance earned him three consecutive All-Southwest Conference selections and three first-team All-American honors. In 1985, he was named Baseball America’s National Player of the Year, and in 1986, he received the Southwest Conference Player of the Year award and the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year honor.

Swindell’s impact extended beyond the college diamond. He was a three-time finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, recognizing the nation’s top amateur baseball player. Following his collegiate success, Swindell was selected second overall in the 1986 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians. He went on to have a 17-year Major League Baseball career, including an All-Star appearance in 1989 and a World Series championship with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001.
