Alaina Coates has rejoined the University of South Carolina’s women’s basketball program as an assistant coach and player development advisor. Her return to the Gamecocks is driven by two deeply personal reasons.
Honoring Her Late Father: Coates wants to pay tribute to her father, Gary Coates, who passed away in 2018. He was her biggest supporter throughout her basketball journey, and she’s eager to give back to the program that shaped her into the person she is today.
Mentoring Young Athletes: Coates is committed to guiding the next generation of Gamecocks, both on and off the court. She believes in helping young athletes achieve their dreams and sees this role as an opportunity to make a positive impact.
As a former Gamecock player from 2013 to 2017, Coates had a stellar collegiate career, earning multiple All-SEC honors and playing a pivotal role in the team’s ascent to national prominence. Her experience and passion for the game make her an invaluable addition to the coaching staff, according to Head Coach Dawn Staley.
Coates’ return strengthens the Gamecocks’ coaching roster and reinforces the program’s tradition of cultivating leaders who continue to contribute beyond their playing days. With her guidance, the team is poised for continued success.
