The incident occurred early in the second half with Coventry already trailing. Awoniyi challenged Brighton defender Maxim De Cuyper for an aerial ball and made contact with the Belgian defender’s face with his arm. Referee Tony Harrington immediately showed the striker a red card, and the decision was subsequently checked and confirmed by VAR. The dismissal left Coventry with ten men and made an already difficult afternoon even more challenging for Frank Lampard’s side.
Awoniyi’s suspension means he is set to miss Coventry City’s upcoming matches against his former club Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup and Newcastle United in the Premier League after the international break.
