The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back a familiar face, signing veteran running back Kareem Hunt to a one-year contract, a source told UPI on Friday.
Hunt, who originally entered the league as a third-round pick by the Chiefs in 2017, delivered his best season since 2020 last year, racking up 904 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns in just 13 games. Now, he’s set to bolster Kansas City’s backfield once again as the defending Super Bowl champions gear up for another title run.
Hunt made an immediate impact as a rookie, earning All-Pro honors and electrifying fans with his dynamic play. Over his 104 career games, he has amassed an impressive 7,230 yards from scrimmage and 64 total touchdowns. In his first two seasons with the Chiefs alone, he tallied 2,984 yards and found the end zone 25 times.
However, his first stint with Kansas City came to an abrupt end in 2018 when the team released him after a video surfaced of him involved in an altercation with a woman. Hunt then spent five seasons with the Cleveland Browns before making his return to the Chiefs last September.
Now back in Kansas City for another go, Hunt joins a crowded running back room featuring lead back Isiah Pacheco, newcomers Elijah Mitchell (formerly of the 49ers), Carson Steele, and Keontay Ingram. With his versatility and experience, Hunt could provide a valuable spark in a Chiefs offense that remains one of the most dangerous in the league.
As Kansas City looks to defend its title, Hunt’s return adds yet another intriguing layer to the team’s quest for back-to-back Super Bowls.
