Spring training serves as a crucial period for players to prepare for the long baseball season and a chance for some to earn a spot on a Major League roster. New York Yankees’ top prospect, Jasson Dominguez, is expected to be part of the team, but his performance in left field early in camp has been drawing attention.
Dominguez has primarily played as a centerfielder, but his transition to left field has not been seamless. This is not the first time he has encountered difficulties in the position. Last season, in 105 innings playing left field for the Yankees, the 22-year-old recorded a .957 fielding percentage, noticeably below the league average of .987.
Despite his struggles, scouting reports suggest that Dominguez is better suited as a corner outfielder rather than a centerfielder, where his defensive instincts, reads, and routes have been inconsistent. However, his arm strength is considered solid to above average.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone remains optimistic about Dominguez’s ability to adapt, stating, “There’s no reason he shouldn’t be able to handle left field,” according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. General manager Brian Cashman also expressed confidence in Dominguez, emphasizing his high potential and current good health, as reported by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Dominguez made his Major League debut in September 2023 and played 18 games for the Yankees in 2024. In 100 plate appearances at the Major League level, he posted a 107 OPS+, hitting six home runs while striking out 27 times. His minor league performance in 2024 was impressive, as he played 58 games across three levels, compiling a .314/.376/.504 batting line with 16 stolen bases. The switch-hitting outfielder will maintain his rookie status through the 2025 season.
With Juan Soto now playing for the New York Mets, the Yankees plan to shift Aaron Judge back to right field. Additionally, the team acquired Cody Bellinger in the offseason, and he is expected to play either center or left field. This means that two of the three outfield spots are likely secured, leaving an opportunity for Dominguez to claim a starting role if he performs well during Grapefruit League action.
