By nearly every measure, the 2024 season was a resounding success for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. While their season ended with a 34-23 loss to Ohio State in the national championship game, their impressive run through the College Football Playoff reinforced their status as one of college football’s premier programs. Head coach Marcus Freeman capped off the season by earning the prestigious Bear Bryant Coach of the Year award, solidifying his reputation as one of the brightest minds in the game.
However, the offseason has brought unexpected challenges for Notre Dame, as two key offensive linemen, guard Rocco Spindler and center Pat Coogan, announced their intentions to transfer.
Spindler was a cornerstone of the offensive line, starting all 16 games this season and playing a crucial role in the unit’s success. Coogan, who started 13 games, was not only a steady presence on the field but also a vocal leader and hype man for the offensive line. Their decisions to leave South Bend via the transfer portal have raised concerns about the team’s depth heading into 2025.
Notre Dame has prided itself on exceptional depth along the offensive line, routinely overcoming injuries with a next-man-up mentality. However, replacing two starters through the transfer portal, rather than natural attrition from graduation, presents a unique challenge for Freeman and his staff.
